I think there has been a mistake in the translation. We wanted warm Weather, not worm weather!
Who knew this much rain all at once could draw out so many worms. I am not sure if there are more worms than usual out there or if we are just noticing them more because the kids are so enamoured with them this year. One thing is for certain, the robins are making out like bandits! There are lots of hatchlings out there with very full tummies!
Since the kids were so interested in these creatures and I am not one to miss out on a teachable moment, I took some time to do a little research. I wanted to make sure what I was telling the kids about worms was correct. Good thing I did. If you are like me you believed that worms come out of the ground when it rained because they would otherwise drown. Makes sence right? Apparently, this is a very popular myth. They actually come up from the soil to mate. They cannot otherwise survive above ground because they would dry out and die. How interesting!
All three of our kids have been so excited about collecting & "saving" the worms from being walked on, & run over. They created a special home for them on our lawn. A heap of dandilions, grass clippings, gravel & mud. I was convinced that the piles of worms that were dumped here were simply being laid out on a platter for the many hungry birds around our house.

However, when I went to move the pile to a more visually acceptable spot I found that the pile was one big wriggling mass. Sadly, I admit some worms may have been severed in the process of moving them to thier new home. Oops.
