Red Necked Grebe

Since I paint primarily (but not exclusively) from pictures, there is always a dilemma for me regarding the decision to leave a photo alone or to paint it.   When the photos turn out well, I feel there is nothing to improve upon, nothing to add, no inspiration, so I tend to leave them as photos.  The photos I tend to paint are the ones that I never managed to capture quite the way my eye saw it.  This newest painting was born in exactly that way.  I was trying hard to get that perfect shot of a Red Necked Grebe (at Beauvais Lake in southern Alberta) and just when he gave me the pose I was waiting for, …my camera lost it’s focus.  I got the shot but it was not one worth keeping.

Instead it became one of a short list that was waiting to become my next painting.  I started this painting last summer so some have seen it around our house looking very much like a watercolour as I had only completed the under-painting.  I finally made some time to finish it yesterday.  Finally, the image I was trying to get is allowed to show through.  Enjoy!
